Community Events - May/June 2008

In the summer months we are rather automatically trying to redirect our activities into free space, nature or park, where we can endlessly enjoy the pleasant weather, long summer evenings or hot summer nights. If you are a fan of summer festivals and you usually travel home to attend one, there is something to look forward to. A summer festival is coming to entertain you in big style. And at the same time several other wonderful events are taking place and they all will decidedly make any summer day enjoyable.

Slovak majáles (The Slovak Rag Day)
31st may 2008
It is not necessary to travel any more to meet traditional Slovak entertainment. Folk song, dance, traditional delicious Slovak food and drink ... all this is a true description of every good rag day. On the 31st of May Slovak music will reverberate in London where the Slovak Rag Day is taking place; in the course of the day the Karpaty folk music ensemble is going to present its art; furthermore, the cymbal player of the ROMANTHAN group Maroš Ďurko and DJ Juro will show their music skills. Karaoke Night – Reading

Karaoke fans in Reading will traditionally meet on 27th of June in the Polish Club Reading.

Garden Party
1st July 2008
 A chance to meet your countrymen is offered every year by the Garden Party organised by the British and Slovak Association. The reunion takes place in the gardens of the Czech and Slovak Embassy in Kensington Palace Gardens and includes refreshments, drinks, traditional live music and the raffle. Slavfest 2008
It is coming in July with the mission of connecting Central, Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Between the 18th and 20th of July the Shoreham Airport at Brighton will be filled with culture, traditions, music and life style typical of these countries. Popular music and folk groups from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Poland, Ukraine, Croatia, Russia and Bulgaria are going to revive traditions and bring contemporary music closer to you. Participants will get a chance to try classical folk dances, to have a look at or try their hand in folk crafts and find out more about tourist industry of the participating countries.
