U.S. Steel Košice is Aware of Its Position - Slovak Steel Giant

img

U.S. Steel Košice is not only a leading contributor to economic, environmental and social development in the east of Slovakia, it also recognises and accepts its role as a responsible partner of Slovak society.

Steel production in Slovakia is one of the oldest industries. Its development, especially in the east, depended upon the abundant occurrence of ironstone. Iron was produced here as early as 600 B.C., but the main development started mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries. During the following centuries, the technique of iron and steel production was improved until finally, on 1st April, 1959 the foundation deed of the modern metallurgic factory Východoslovenské železiarne was signed.

A new era in the history of the Košice ironworks began on 24th November, 2000 when the whole metallurgical part was taken over by the important American steel company, The United Steel Corporation.
