England vs. Slovakia – Friendlies

England will play Slovakia in friendly international at Wembley in 2009. The Football Association has slashed ticket prices. Members of the official England supporters club can watch the game for £25, with juniors paying £12.50 in the family enclosure, which has been increased in capacity by 60%. The game has a 5.15pm kick-off and will act as a warm-up for the World Cup quilifier against Ukraine on 1 April.

The Grand National

A famous horse race, a "steeplechase", which involves jumping over fences. You can see it in the afternoon on television on BBC1. Many British people like to make a small bet about the result of this race.

Shakespeare's Birthday Celebration

23 April is the day on which the birthday of William Shakespeare is celebrated.
Shakespeare's birthday is celebrated of course in the town where he was born. There is a street procession and other entertainment with a Shakesperean theme

The London Marathon

The London Marathon has been taking place each year since 1981. Many of the runners are taking part in order to raise money for charity. Races start between 9am and 10am. You can also watch the marathon on television: it is shown on BBC1 in the morning and early afternoon. If you want to apply to run in next year's race, obtain a copy of London Marathon News from a local sports shop (not all people who apply are accepted).
