img

The state run enterprise, Lesy SR, š.p., Banská Bystrica, is responsible for managing almost 50% (1 mil. ha) of forestsin the Slovak Republic. One of the main activities of the enterprise is hunting and hunting related tourism, which is why thousands of hunters arrive in the heart of the Slovak countryside every year.

Hunting grounds are spread all over the country enabling the company to organise hunts of all kinds of animals for its guests. From 1st November until the end of February, it is possible to hunt for pheasants in pheasant shooting grounds. Accomodation for guests is mainly provided by the organisation at its own hunting castles, mountain hotels, hunting manors or in simple hunting lodges situated deep in teh mountains, within a hunting estate. Hunting clients who visit Slovak forests com from all over the world. In 2007, as many as 4,500 hunters came to the Slovak Republic.

English hunters were mainly interested in shooting quality pheasants which can fly high. At present, pheasant hunting is organised in six pheasant areas. At the beginning of the 20th century, the shoot in Palárikovo had a close working relationship with the prestigious pheasant shoot of the English royal family in Sandringham. Here in the Palárikovo can be found an historic hunting manor which i sused as accommodation, suitable for even the most demanding foreign guests. Apart from Palárikovo, pheasant shooting guests have an alternative choice of accommodation at the stylish hunting castle Topoľčianky.

Air connections are available from Schwechat airport in austria or Budapest airport in Hungary. From there, it tahes between one and two hours to reach a hotel and a hunting location. Hunting traditions that are part of the hunting culture of Slovakia play an important part in the organisation of the hunts. At the final ceremony of the hunt, its course is evaluated and most successful hunter is declared the king of the hunt. After the hunt, a banquet is organised for guests at the hunting castle.

English hunters are thus able to experience not only something new – pheasant hunting – but also to learn hunting culture and traditions at the heart of Central Europe – in Slovakia.
