Dobsinska Ice Cave – The Beauty of Ice

img

Dobsinska Ice Cave (Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa) is ranked among the biggest and the most precious creations of nature in the Slovak Republic and in 2000 was included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.

This national natural monument, hidden in the heart of Slovak paradise, was discovered in 1870 by royal mining engineer Eugen Ruffinyi and his companions. The cave was opened to the public just one year after its discovery. Regular electric lighting was introduced in 1887 and the cave belongs amongst the first electrically illuminated caves in the world. The cave is located in the highlands area of Stratenská, close to the mining town of Dobšiná, in Slovak Paradise. The entrance to the cave is on the northern slope of Duča hill – 969.50 meters above sea level. The cave has a total length of 1,232 m and was formed in the Middle Triassic limestone by the former underground stream of the Hnilec river, with waters penetrating along the tectonic faults.

The total volume of ice is estimated to be approximately 110 000 m3. The main part of the cave is a great underground cavern with a width of 180 m that was formed by the breakdown of rock pillars between upper and lower developmental levels. The major part is filled with ice, sometimes to the roof.
