The Biggest One Is Spišský Hrad – King Among Castles

img

No other castle in Slovakia deserves such an appellation. Spišský hrad is unequivocally the biggest castle complex under the High Tatras and amongst the largest fortresses in Europe. In 1993 the castle was placed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

The foundation stone of this breathtaking fortress was first laid in the 12th century and its completion took an unbelievable 600 years. It is an amazing place, built on a site originally used by the Celts. In its lower courtyard you can admire the remains of their culture even to today! In latter periods the castle was owned by the Hungarian kings, the Zapolya family, the Thurzo family and the Csaky family for whom it served as an aristocratic residence.

During a fire in 1780 the castle suff ered widespread damage. Extensive reseach, conservation and the installation of an exhibition hall in recent years has brought a new lease of life to this important monument which enjoys the interest of many tourists.
